Preparing Your Home for a Long Trip Away

Tips on how to prepare you home before you travel

There are many things to do to prepare your house for your absence when you have a long-term travel plan. Below, you will find a few key travel tips for your home safety that will allow you to truly enjoy your travel!!! smile

  • First, make sure you have a trustworthy neighbour. Tell him or her about your plans. Ask them to hold a spare key in case you lose your purse/wallet/keys.
  • Make sure you leave a list of your credit card numbers, providers, and the customer service phone numbers in a safe place in your home, like a sealed envelope hidden in the freezer. This way, if you DO lose your purse or wallet on your trip, your neighbour and or family can use your spare key to get into your home, give you the numbers on the list, and you can cancel the cards.
  • Stop your newspaper and ask the post office to hold your mail. A pile of mail that has accumulated during your trip is a sure sign that you’re away ( you can always request your utilities are emailed to you as well rather than posted)
  • Turn off your water main, to avoid pipes freezing or bursting while you are away.
  • For all you renters out there, notify your landlord of your plans and leave your contact information with them. Be sure to have a payment plan worked out.
  • For pet and plant owners, recruit friends and family (or your friendly neighbour with the spare key) to tend to your pets and plants.
  • Clean out your fridge. You don’t want to come home to a smelly kitchen! Take into account how long you’ll be gone and decide what to keep and what to throw away. If your long-term travel plans will be over two months long, throw away everything and start fresh when you come home.  Don’t forget to take out the trash!
  • Cleaning- it would be a good idea to have your whole house professionally cleaned a few days before your trip. The night before your departure, lay sheets over your furniture to prevent dust from accumulating during your months-long travel.
  • Last but not least- double check all of the above x2 and once this is done, you’re ready to hit the road!

Safe Travels and enjoy! smile
