This scenic hinterland drive will take you through the beautiful villages of Bexhill, Clunes and Eltham. Just 10kms from Lismore is Bexhill with panoramic views from the Open Air Cathedral and a popular spot for outdoor weddings, a picnic or just a quiet place to ponder. The Bexhill General store on the main street has some of the best Indian curries!
Clunes is 10km’s from Bexhill and is said to be the birthplace of the region’s dairy industry. The General Store is a handy little place with a post office, liquor store and serves delicious takeaway pizza.
The Clunes Coffee Inn offers great coffee and a large range of cakes and slices, many of them gluten free.
A short walk on the main street is The Old Romantic Shack with a wonderful range of new & old worldly gifts, antiques & bric a brac. Native Nursery, just a little further up the road, specialises in Australian Natives & is well worth a visit if you have a green thumb.
Head to the Booyong Nature and Flora Reserves (remnants of the “Big Scrub”) by taking the first right hand turn into Booyong Rd, past Stewarts Rd through the Eucalypt plantations. The reserve is home to a colony of fruit bats and there is a short circuit walk (overgrown in some areas).
Continue through Booyong and follow the signs for 6.5km until you reach the historic railway village of Eltham. The Eltham Hotel and Restaurant is an absolute must with their delicious ‘home style’ food or the Eltham Valley Pantry with café and gallery is just a further 2km down the road serving breakfast, lunch, morning or afternoon tea.
